Below is a summary of what we looked at:
Our brain receives a huge number of impulses every second. To be able to handle so much information we filter it in all sorts of ways, chunking it into groups, ignoring bits we don’t deem relevant and focusing our attention on things that matter to us. Each of us filters differently, noticing different things when seeing and hearing the same information. The magic lies in knowing both how someone else filters information and knowing how you do. An understanding of exactly what filters are in play and how they’re being used can completely change the effectiveness of our communication with individuals and with groups.

Although these programs can be quite context sensitive (eg we may run a different program at home than we do at work) we tend to be quite consistent within that context as to which filters we use.
Determining what filter someone is using in any given situation is often quite easy
since our language gives it away. All we need to do is ask a good question and listen
very closely to how they perceive the question and what they choose to make important.
For example if you ask someone, “Why did you choose this job?” some may answer with
a list of reasons and some may start telling you a story. In this case the first
person heard the word ‘Why?’ and gave the answer. The second person filtered the
word ‘Why?’ and actually answered the question ‘How?’ -
The filters we explored at the NLP South meeting were:
Towards/Away from
Internal/External Frame of Reference
Similarities/Differences
Inside/Outside processing
